Read the part of the poem given below
and do the tasks. 5
I remember, I remember
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun
Came peeping in at morn;
He never came a wink too soon
Nor bought too long a day;
But now, I often wish the night
Had borne my breath away.
I remember, I remember
The roses, red and white,
The violets, and the lily-cups–
Those flowers are made of light!
The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birthday,–
The tree is living yet!
I remember, I remember
Where I was used to swing,
And through the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers then
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow.

“Yogmaya had a two-pronged agenda, not just one,” explained
Manamaya. “Her first target was the cultural and religious oppression of the
time. Her second object was our ruler, the Prime Minister, who along with his
generals allowed corruption and inequality to prevail. Our master, Shakti
Yogmaya, showed us how these two evils are intertwined, and she feared
neither.”
Yogamaya launched a brilliant and daring political campaign
from her base in the hills of East Nepal. It took place during the 1930s, and
ended in 1940 with her death, along with sixty-eight of her followers who one
by one followed her into the thundering current of the Arun River. After
leading a campaign for reform and justice, Yogmaya finally confronted the ruler
with an ultimatum: “If you do not grant us justice, we will die,” she declared.
Juddha Shamsher responded by sending his army to round up the protesters. The
tragedy that resulted remains a stain on the government.
The Nepalese authorities covered up the episode and banned
all mention of her. Her campaign was thoroughly expunged from the nation’s
historical record and almost lost to its political consciousness. But the
powerful verses composed by Yogmaya, the hazurbani, survived. And there lies
the story.

Genocide is a crime on a different scale from all other
crimes against humanity and it implies an intention to completely exterminate
the chosen group; genocide is therefore the greatest of the crimes against
humankind. The massacres that transpired in Rwanda Less than four years ago
possess every quality attributed to the ramifications of genocide. There, in
the clearest case of genocide since Hitler, a cast slaughter occurred which
claimed the lives of more than 8000,000 Rwandans.
This genocide is probably the greatest and the gravest
crime against humanity in the second half of the twentieth century, and no
group whether foreign or indigenous executed enough force to prevent this from
occurring. The United States stood by and watched the horrific events unfold.
The Clinton administration, facing what was the clearest case of genocide in 50
years, responded by downplaying the crisis diplomatically and impeding
effective intervention by U.N. forces to stop the killing. A great crime
against humanity did exist through the individual tortures, rapes, and
slaughters of the Rwandans; but hidden in all of the turmoil and rage, was the
crime of passivity and evasion in the United States’ response towards all of
the crimes and suffering. One million Rwandan civilians were left to die, but
that could have been significantly reduced with the initial intervention and
side of the U.S. government.
Rwanda has been subjected to a number of historical events
that have led up to its genocide. After WW I, they were put under a Belgian
Trusteeship that imposed a rigid plan of racial classification, dividing the
Rwandans into three distinct groups; the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. The Hutu
comprised about 84 per cent of the total population in Rwanda while the Tutsi
were 15 per cent and the Twa represented a meagre 1 per cent of the population.
The Belgians’ racist ideals provided a framework for the social classes that
would exist in Rwanda. The Tutsi were deemed superior in all aspects to the
Hutus and themselves. “Their racialization of the political reality was
exploited.” According to the
Belgians, possessed politeness and greater intelligence
that surpassed the levels that were inherent among the other tribes. The
“whiteness”, including facial features, behavioural tendencies, and
personality, reflected many characteristics of the white race.
The Belgians presented them with an opportunity for
education and a Christian
upbringing. It was this intervention that sowed the seeds
for future resentment among the clans. Disgruntled by their new low-level
social status, resentment began to grow amongst the Hutu clan towards the
Tutsi.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a
yellow wood,
And sorry I could not
travel both
And be one traveler,
long I stood
And looked down one as
far as I could
To where it bent in the
undergrowth;
Then took the other, as
just as far,
And having perhaps the
better claim
Because it was grassy
and wanted wear,
Though as for that the
passing there
Had worn them really
about the same,
And both that morning
equally lay
In leaves no step had
trodden black,
Oh, I kept the first
for another day!
Yet knowing how way
leads on to way,
I doubted if I should
ever come back.
I shall be telling this
with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages
hence:
Two roads diverged in a
wood, and, I
I took the one less
travelled by,
And that has made all
the difference. – Robert Frost

I entered the building
and as instructed by the curator, I bought a ticket and hired a special hand
machine that will play the recorded voice to explain to me everything in
English. Asa, I passed the administrative building, I came across a beautiful
garden; it was full of pointed shapes of fir and pine trees, giving the best
proof of French topiary. Far away stood other trees like walnut, juniper and
yew, birds chirruped from the top. Among the topiary art stood a huge black
bust, on top of which lay a drooping figure of Rodin. Not Rodin himself but a
magnificent sculpture of him. It is commonly known as Rodin’s Thinking Man. The
Thinking Man squatted on a large and tall marble slap, in a half-bent posture
and reflective mood. This is one of the masterpieces in modern art, an
incomparable work. Rodin’s pensive mood is remarkable.
Three years ago I
visited a smaller museum in Baltimore; Sewa had joined me from Illinois. In the
very small museum, Rodin’s copy too was quite small, Rodin’s little thinker in
Baltimore was a black metal work, just a replica. I remember writing an article
which reminds us of our visit to Baltimore, and van Gogh’s Irises. It got
published in Antarderisti edited by Jyoti Ghimire of the USA.

Newborn babies do not
know if they are boys or girls, but it does not take them long to find out.
They very quickly learn the way that their society expects males and females to
behave and think. That is, they learn their gender roles.
From the moment of
birth, babies are usually treated according to their gender. In many other
countries, baby girls tend to be dressed in pink clothing and baby boys in
blue. Baby girls are handled more gently than boys. Girls are cuddled and
kissed while boys are bounced around and lifted high in the air. Girls are
given dolls, whereas boys are given cars, trucks and building blocks. Mothers
think a lot about how pretty their girls should look, but they are less
connected about their little boys’ appearance.
When they start to
talk, children are taught the difference between the words “he” and “she” and
between “him” and “her”. There are also differences in the way parents talk to
their children. Parents use words about feelings and emotions more with girls
than with boys; by age 2, girls use these words more than boys do. Furthermore,
mothers and fathers talk differently, because of their socialization. Mothers
tend to talk more politely (Could you turn off the TV, please) and fathers tend
to use more direct language (Turn off the TV). By age 4, girls and boys have
learned to imitate these conversational styles. Girls are generally taught to
be “ladylike” – polite and gentle.
